Who is this OET course for doctors for?

The course is built for international medical graduates who need OET Medicine as English evidence and want a structured route through all four sub-tests.

Doctors applying to the GMC

If you are preparing for GMC registration through PLAB or another approved route, OET Medicine is one of the accepted English tests. The UK pathway guide explains where OET fits in the GMC route.

Doctors on the ECFMG pathway

ECFMG accepts OET Medicine for its certification pathways. The USA pathway guide covers ECFMG, USMLE and the state-based licensing route.

Doctors heading to Australia or the Gulf

OET Medicine is also used for medical registration in other countries. Check your destination in the Australia pathway guide or the Gulf pathway guide before booking.

What OET score do doctors need?

For the UK, the GMC asks for grade B in all four OET Medicine sub-tests in one sitting. For the USA, ECFMG asks for 350 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and 300 in Writing, also in one sitting.

How do doctors pass OET Writing?

OET Medicine Writing gives you 45 minutes (5 minutes of reading time and 40 minutes of writing) to turn case notes into one letter of about 180–200 words, usually to a medical colleague who will take over or continue care.

Referral to a specialist

Summarise the presenting problem, relevant history, investigations and management so far, then state exactly what you want the specialist to do and how urgently.

Discharge or referral back to the GP

Tell the GP what happened in hospital, what changed, and what follow-up, monitoring or medication review is needed in the community.

Transfer and urgent referral letters

Lead with the reason for transfer or the urgent concern, then give only the details the receiving team needs to act safely.

What the examiner checks

Purpose, content, conciseness and clarity, genre and style, organisation and layout, and language. Doctors often lose marks by writing a chronological history instead of a letter organised around the reader’s task.

The course trains a repeatable method for letter purpose, case-note selection and a specific final request on medical tasks, and the OET Writing tips show the core rules. If your letters keep landing just below B, OET writing correction shows you exactly what is costing marks.

What consultations will you practise for OET Speaking?

OET Speaking has two role-plays. You get 3 minutes to prepare each card and about 5 minutes to complete it, with the interlocutor playing the patient or a relative.

Typical Medicine scenarios

  • Explaining a diagnosis or test result in patient-friendly language
  • Discussing investigations and treatment options
  • Breaking bad news with empathy and a clear plan
  • Responding to a worried or angry relative
  • Persuading a reluctant patient, for example about smoking or medication adherence

How you are assessed

Examiners score clinical communication (relationship building, understanding the patient’s perspective, providing structure, gathering information and giving information) as well as intelligibility, fluency, appropriate language and grammar. Doctors usually need to replace medical jargon with plain explanations and check the patient’s understanding.

The course includes 100+ Speaking cards across different scenarios, and the live 1:1 session lets you rehearse them with feedback. Read the OET Speaking tips for the role-play method before your session.

How do you prepare for OET Listening and Reading?

Listening and Reading are the same for every profession, so doctors sit exactly the same papers as other candidates. What changes your score is method, not luck.

Listening (about 40 minutes)

Part A is note completion from two consultations, Part B is short workplace extracts and Part C is longer presentations or interviews. Train prediction before each extract and write exactly what you hear, with correct spelling. See the OET Listening tips.

Reading (60 minutes)

Part A is a strict 15-minute scanning task across four short texts; Parts B and C test detail, gist and inference. Use keyword anchors in Part A and eliminate distractors in Parts B and C. See the OET Reading tips.

The course practice library gives you timed papers with answer keys and rationales, and the separate Listening and Reading practice packages add more papers when you need volume before the exam.

Which add-ons help most before exam day?

Every package can be extended when you need more feedback. Add-ons are tied to your active course and are the fastest way to fix the sub-test that is holding your score back.

Extra Writing assessments

Add 3, 5, 7 or 10 letter assessments to an active course. Each letter is marked manually with an estimated score, detailed correction and voice-note feedback via WhatsApp. You can choose your own letters or follow recall-recommended tasks.

Private Speaking sessions

Book one or two live 1:1 Speaking assessment sessions. Each session covers different OET cards and ends with detailed performance feedback, so you hear exactly what to change before the real role-plays.

Full mock exams

Sit 1, 3 or 5 full OET mock exams across all four sub-tests. Writing and Speaking are assessed with detailed feedback, Listening and Reading are auto-marked, and each mock package is valid for 6 months.

Can you see real OET results first?

Yes. Before you enrol, browse the 1,750+ verified OET score cards from 2021–2026 shared by doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who prepared with Dr Hesham. They are grouped by year, so you can see recent results rather than old screenshots.

Is the OET Medicine course live or recorded?
